Glenn McGrath launches Think2020 to inspire young people

After the success of this summer’s men’s Cricket World Cup and the ongoing Ashes series in this country, there is a real opportunity for cricket to inspire the next generation of fans and players.

Legendary fast bowler Glenn McGrath has partnered with online financial trading broker ThinkMarkets to get more young people into sport.

McGrath, who represented Australia in 124 Test matches and took 563 wickets, (the second highest figure for a pace bowler in history behind only England’s Jimmy Anderson) has launched the Think2020 initiative which will also provide young sportspeople with advice on looking after their financial futures as well as their physical health.

Speaking at a Think2020 coaching session at The Oval, he said: “It’s been great to see the excitement generated in England off the back of that memorable Cricket World Cup final.

“This Ashes series promises to be one of the most closely fought in recent history and there has never been a better time to showcase our beautiful game.

“It’s easy for kids to become inactive these days with phones and tablets, so it’s vital that we encourage them to get out and play sport. Yes, the weather in England isn’t always perfect for cricket but there are indoor facilities like those we used with ThinkMarkets at The Oval which can provide opportunities to learn the game.

“I hope that the next young generation of sports stars can be inspired by this great summer of sport. The message I give my children is to make the most of every opportunity and never think something can’t be done, just because it isn’t the conventional route. If I’d listened to convention, I may never have become an international cricketer!”

A peak audience of 8.3m people watched England win the Cricket World Cup last month despite the Wimbledon men’s singles final and British Formula One Grand Prix taking place on the same day.

Interest in the female game has also grown exponentially with sell-out crowds now a regular occurrence in the Women’s Big Bash League in Australia and Kia Super League in England.

It is not just about growing the game on the field however, with ThinkMarkets and McGrath keen to inspire young people to pay attention to their financial health from an early age.

The 49-year-old added: “I’ve definitely noticed a shift since I retired from cricket in the way that professional athletes now focus on their futures while in the middle of their playing careers.

“It’s great to be able to give advice to these young people from the perspective of someone who has been through the highs and lows of professional sport.”

The Think 2020 programme will also educate and encourage more young people to take up traditional trading jobs in financial services.
